Terms of use

How the game, memberships and the Trading Post work, what we promise you, and what we ask of you.

Last updated 26 September 2026.

Who we are, and who can play

SL Colonies Roleplay is run jointly by Samuel Lison, in Australia, and Jayson Wiggans (Drakkhis), our lead developer, in Belgium. By using this website, the forum or the game, you agree to these terms. How we handle your data is in the privacy notice.

You must be 18 or over. We do not check ages, but we may close an account we have good reason to believe belongs to someone younger. The game runs inside Second Life, so Linden Lab’s own Terms of Service and Community Standards apply to you as well. Where those forbid something, we do too.

Your account

Your account is tied to your Second Life avatar, which you prove is yours with a code we send it in-world. You are responsible for what is done through your avatars and your account. One person may have several avatars on one account; please do not share an account with someone else.

Game items have no cash value

Coins, CXP, gems, platinum, items, recipes and everything else in the game are part of the game. They are not money or property, cannot be exchanged back into Linden dollars by us, and may change as we balance the game — an item may get stronger, weaker or be retired. We will not remove things you paid for without good reason, and if we retire something you bought, we will tell you in advance and offer something fair in its place.

Linden dollars

We accept payments in Linden dollars (L$) inside Second Life. L$ belong to Linden Lab: under its terms they are a licence, not currency, and Linden Lab can revoke them. We do not buy or sell L$, and you may only buy or sell them through Linden Lab’s LindeX. Anything that affects your L$ on Linden Lab’s side is between you and Linden Lab.

Memberships and platinum

The membership page shows the tiers, what each includes and what they cost. A membership lasts for the time you paid for and does not renew automatically; we remind you before it ends. Platinum included with a membership is added when you buy it. Members can buy extra platinum.

Refunds. A membership starts, and its platinum arrives, the moment your payment lands, so we do not give change-of-mind refunds once that has happened. If we make a mistake — you are charged twice, or something you paid for does not arrive — we put it right or refund you. None of this affects your rights under consumer law. In particular, the guarantees of the Australian Consumer Law cannot be excluded. If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, by paying for a membership that starts straight away you ask us to supply it immediately and accept that your 14-day right to cancel ends once it has started.

The Trading Post

The Trading Post lets players sell sealed crates of goods to each other for L$. We are not the seller. Sellers are players, usually not businesses, so consumer rights you would have against a shop generally do not apply to them. We take no commission: the seller receives the whole price.

What we do:

  • Show each crate’s contents before you buy. A crate is sealed before it is listed, and its contents cannot change after that.
  • Hold your payment only until the goods change hands, then pay the seller through our in-world bot. We hold it for nothing else, and not to settle disputes.
  • Deliver what you bought to your crates page, where you open it into your game inventory.

What buyers and sellers agree to:

  • Sellers must own everything they seal and describe it honestly. Sealing costs platinum, needs a Citizen membership or above, and cannot be undone. Prices run from L$1 to L$1,000,000, at a fixed price or at auction for 1 to 14 days. You cannot buy or bid on your own crate.
  • Bids are binding. You bid the most you are willing to pay, and pay only what it takes to beat the next bid. If you are outbid, your money comes back automatically. There is no reserve price: once an auction has a bid, it will sell, and the seller can no longer withdraw it.
  • Buyers pay our bot in-world from their main avatar within the time the page shows (usually 20 minutes). Buying needs a website account with a verified avatar, but no membership. To use what you buy, you need to play the game.
  • A crate sold as a physical object in Second Life — in your own vendor, on the Marketplace or hand to hand — is sold between players, outside the Trading Post, and we are not part of that sale.

Once a sale completes, it is final. Our bot pays the seller, and a Linden-dollar payment cannot be reversed — not by us, and not by anyone else. We do not hold money to settle disagreements, and we do not step into disputes between buyers and sellers: a disagreement about what was sold is between the two of you.

The one exception is our own system failing: if you paid for a crate and it never reached your crates page, open a support ticket and we will make sure it gets there.

How to behave

Do not:

  • Harass, threaten or deceive other players, or impersonate anyone.
  • Share another player’s personal information, including their other avatars or where they are in real life, without their consent.
  • Scam, sell things you do not own, or misdescribe what is in a crate.
  • Exploit bugs, script or automate the game in ways it is not built for, or try to get into accounts or parts of the site that are not yours. If you find a bug, report it on the forum.
  • Run gambling, wagering on chance, or anything that pays interest on L$, or buy or sell L$ outside the LindeX.
  • Upload or write anything illegal, or that infringes someone else’s rights.

What you write and upload

You own what you create — your backstory, realm pages, colony descriptions, crate labels, pictures and recipes you invent. You give us permission to store it and show it where you put it, for as long as it is there. You can remove it, and deleting your account removes it.

Reporting. If you see something on the site that is illegal or breaks these rules, open a support ticket or write to [email protected], saying where it is and why. We may remove content or restrict an account that breaks these terms. A person, not a program, makes those decisions. We tell you what we did and why, and you can reply to ask us to look again.

Ending your account

You can delete your account at any time from your profile.

We may suspend or close an account for serious or repeated breaches of these terms, fraud, or where the law requires it. Except where it would be unsafe or unlawful, we tell you why first and give you a chance to respond. If we close your account without you having broken these terms, we refund the unused part of any membership.

Complaints

Open a support ticket or write to [email protected]. We acknowledge complaints within 30 days, look into them properly, and tell you the outcome.

Keeping the game running

We work to keep the game and the site running, but they depend on Second Life, Discord and other services we do not control, and there will be interruptions. We are not responsible for what Linden Lab does, for grid problems, or for what other players do.

If the game has to close

We may close the game, or retire parts of it, if we have to. If we do, we will give you as much notice as we can — normally at least 60 days — in the Herald, on the forum and in-world. Once a closure has been announced, we stop selling memberships that would run past the closing date.

When the game closes, in-world objects that rely on our servers — the HUD, stations, vendors and the rest — will stop working, and game items and balances will no longer be usable. We do not refund Linden dollars spent in the game when it closes, except where the law requires us to.

What we are responsible for

If something goes wrong and it is our fault, the most we owe you is the value of what you paid us in the 12 months before it happened. That is a limit on a claim, not a promise of a refund.

Some rights cannot be limited by any terms, and nothing here takes them away: the guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law, and our responsibility for death or injury caused by our negligence, and for fraud.

Changes to these terms

We may change these terms to reflect changes to the game, the law or how we work. For a significant change we announce it in the Herald and on the forum at least 14 days before it takes effect, saying what is changing. If you do not agree, you can delete your account before then.

The law that applies

These terms are governed by the law of Victoria, Australia, and its courts can hear any dispute about them. If you live elsewhere as a consumer, you keep the protections your own country’s law gives you, and you can bring a claim in your local courts.
