The Grafting Table is the vintner's bench, a Brewer station. Wear a grafting knife, sit down, and it opens an app on the table, or the same app in your browser. Every step is a short, hands-on moment that snaps into place when you're close, never a test you can fail.
Cross two cuttings and breed something new. One dab of pollen raises three to five seedlings in the table's five pots, each taking one copy of every gene from each parent. Over seven days they show what they carry: size and vigour first, then ripening and mildew resistance, aroma, and finally colour, sugar and acid. Keep one and it founds a line in your name, named by the game for what it shows, with ten of its seed in your pack. Each seedling has a 1 in 40 chance of a mutation, 1 in 25 when the two lines come from different colonies.
Self a vine (cross it with itself) to double up a trait only that line carries until it shows and breeds true, at a cost: one selfed seedling in four loses some vigour or a mildew resistance.
Graft a cutting onto a rootstock and the same grapes grow where they couldn't before: riparia takes the pH floor 0.3 lower for sour ground, rupestris the moisture floor 15 lower for dry ground, berlandieri the pH ceiling 0.4 higher for chalky ground. A graft takes three times in four, 85% for a Brewer of level 5, using one knife use and one plain wool string. Seal it with grafting wax and a graft that doesn't take gives you the cutting back.
Root a cutting into ten seed of its line: no roll, no knife use. It's how a variety grows past its first vineyard.
Cuttings come from care. A vineyard kept in its pH and moisture band all week harvests Choice, and a Choice harvest gives a cutting of its line. Rootstocks and the vine assay kit, which finds a vine's hidden genes, are sold for CXP by the Brewer's Master on Everdale Isle. Every graft pays 50 Brewer CXP and every cross 100.
Your varieties are yours to sell. A line's grapes, seed, juice and cuttings trade like any other item, and the market hubs never stock them. Your vines and everything you've found about them are on your profile, with a cross planner for the next breed.
A table holds one cross at a time, so a serious breeder keeps more than one. Who may sit follows the table's security, as on every SL Colonies station.
What you need to get started
Wear a grafting knife and sit down: the table opens its app in-world, or the same app in your browser. The knife wears a little with each graft; everything else listed is used up.
To sit
A grafting knife, worn
50 uses; a graft wears one. Crossing and rooting wear none, but you need a knife with a use left to sit.
A graft
- 1 cutting
- 1 rootstock
- 1 plain wool string
- 1 grafting wax, if you seal it
Takes 75% of the time, 85% for a Brewer of level 5: a new line and 10 of its seed.
A cross
2 cuttings
3 to 5 seedlings in the pots, ready in 7 days. Keep one to found your own line and take 10 of its seed. One cross at a time to a table.
Root
1 cutting
Becomes 10 seed of its line, every time: no roll, no knife use.
It pays Brewers: 50 Brewer CXP a graft, whether it takes or not, and 100 a cross. Anyone the table's security allows can use it; only a Brewer earns from it.
The rootstocks
| Rootstock | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Riparia | pH floor 0.3 lower | Sour ground |
| Rupestris | Moisture floor 15 lower | Dry ground |
| Berlandieri | pH ceiling 0.4 higher | Chalky ground |
Where the supplies come from
| Supply | At the table | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Grafting knife | Worn to sit at the table; a graft wears one of its 50 uses | 1 × small steel blade, 1 × small wooden handle make 1 at the Forge, a level 1 Smith recipe. |
| Plain wool string | Binds a graft: one each | 1 × wool make 1 at the Spinning Wheel, a level 0 recipe anyone can make. |
| Grafting wax | Seals a graft, if you like: one each; a sealed graft that does not take gives the cutting back | 1 × beeswax, 2 × fir resin make 7 at the Cooking Station, a level 1 Cook recipe. |
| Cuttings | The vines themselves: one a graft, two a cross, one rooted | A Choice harvest gives one cutting of the line that grew there: keep a vineyard in its pH and moisture band through its growing week. Vineyards in the shop. |
| Rootstocks | One a graft: riparia, rupestris or berlandieri | The Brewer's Master on Everdale Isle sells all three, for CXP. |
| Vine assay kit | Finds a vine's hidden genes, one a use, at its vineyard. Optional | The Brewer's Master sells it for CXP: 10 uses. |
